Don’t forget about nutrition

Types of belly fat

There are many types of belly fat out there. Regardless of the type of stubborn belly fat that you have, including healthy eating habits, lifestyle changes and belly fat loss workouts will help you get rid of that problem.

In terms of belly fat, overall, there are two main ones:

Visceral fat

This is the type of fat that surrounds the organs. It usually covers the organs around your abdomen area, like your stomach, intestines, liver, pancreas, etc.

Visceral fat is more dangerous for the body, as it can cause disorders like type 2 diabetes, cancer, heart disease, liver damage, gall bladder related issues and dementia. In addition to that, visceral fat is “metabolically active” tissue. This means that it contains more cells, blood vessels and nerves. This is the type of fat that you want to get rid of, since it’s dangerous for the body but that can be easily reduced when boosting your metabolism. Too much belly fat (visceral fat) can lead to problems like higher triglyceride and LDL cholesterol levels. It can also lower the “good cholesterol” (HDL).

Subcutaneous fat

This type of fat is found right beneath the skin. If you can picture it, the layer is right under your skin. It is a superficial type of fat, beneath your skin.

Dietary changes, including exercise, can significantly reduce the amount of belly fat, especially the visceral fat.

Now that you understand the main types of belly fat, all you have to do is work towards a healthier eating regimen, reduce environmental factors like sleep and stress, balance your hormones, and practice more belly fat loss workouts.

How belly fat loss workouts are effective

In order to effectively burn stubborn belly fat, focus on including varieties of exercises. You may be thinking that cardio is the best way to burn belly fat, however, there are other workouts that you should include in your regimen. So, to get the best results in reducing belly fat, also focus on toning your body or building muscle.

The more lean your body becomes, the more body fat you burn. The reason is simple: our muscles are more metabolically active, compared to other tissues like fat. As a matter of fact, once you get a body scan, you will notice that the amount of belly fat is inversely proportional to the amount of muscle. That’s right, if you have a higher percentage of muscle in your body, then you will have less belly fat.

That being said, focus on adding to your routine both cardio and strength training exercises. These are effective to be able to lose belly fat accordingly.

Here are some of my favorite and most effective belly fat loss workouts:

Walking

This is probably the most underrated exercise to lose belly fat. Going for a walk around the neighborhood, or even taking your pet for quick walks is effective to help you lose stubborn belly fat.

Running

Similarly, running is one of those effective belly fat loss workouts. You don’t have to run a marathon, but getting some quick jogging will work wonders. Remember that more than the intensity is the consistency that will give you results.

Biking

I personally think that biking is one of the most relaxing, fun exercises to help burn belly fat. You can do it casually around a park or you can go more intense like cycling. Actually, gyms offer spinning classes, which are great as belly fat loss workouts.

Swimming

Swimming is one of the most complete exercises to stay in shape. It also strengthens the core, which is how you will lose belly fat.

HIIT exercises

In my previous blog post about HIIT exercises, I explain why these are the go-to when you’re trying to do cardio effectively. HIIT workouts are a great way to burn that stubborn belly fat, without spending hours at the gym.

Jumping jacks

This is an oldie but a goodie. Jumping jacks are a simple form of cardio to exercise the entire body. Apart from that, jumping jacks are great to help you lose that belly fat.

Group fitness classes

Why I love group fitness classes as belly fat loss workout is because you can have while doing the exercises. Coupled to that, you get the motivation from the trainer and peers to get going, even when you don’t feel like it. It’s a groove that will boost your metabolism and energy. Besides that, group classes have the advantage of guided exercises that target those group muscles. The more you train at group classes, you will have less belly fat.

Core exercises

These are the best belly fat loss workouts. Core exercises specifically target the belly. You can do ab crunches or practice different variations.

Pro tip: Have you ever heard about the waist trainers? I love using a waist trainer while I workout my core. These help to promote more sweat around the waistline. This is great because it gives a thermal effect under your skin and it helps to shape that area. As well, I noticed how it helps with a correct posture while I’m performing my exercises. The one I use definitely helps to trim that waistline while promoting fat burn! My favorite brand is Sweat Belt, from Vanna Belt. You’ll get a discount on your purchase below.

Alta Fitness
Planks

Planks are easy ab exercises to help you burn belly fat. Besides strengthening your muscles, planks are easy to make and don’t take that long to perform. You can easily do 3 repetitions of 1 minute each. I promise, you will feel the burn!

Squats

Even though squats target mostly glutes and legs, proper squat form can also impact the core. Because squats exercise the lower body, these are some of the best belly fat loss workouts.

Pro tip: One thing I use to enhance my workout is glute bands. Fitness experts recommend using glute bands when performing lower body exercises, to enhance the “burn” on the area, improve posture and give more tension to the muscles. My favorite Alta Fitness lower body resistance bands are anti-slip and roll. They come in 3 levels, from light to heavy. Below, I left you the ones I’m using. You’ll get a 20% discount on your purchase here.

Whether you choose to do the old form of push ups or other variations, these are great to help you burn belly fat effectively. Do at least 10 push ups daily. Besides strengthening your arms, you will have a toned belly.
